Band Profile: Kevin Chinault

Here is the last of our band profiles. Kevin is a man of few words and he gets straight to the point.
"I've been playing for about three years. My favorite era of music would have to be late sixties early seventies. I like pocket driven, Jamin music."

Band Profile: John Rardin

"Throughout my life, my musical influences have varied a lot from adolescence to adulthood. Growing up, I was heavily influenced by the classic rock like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin that my parents listened to. Later when my older brother was in high school I started hearing more hard rock and metal blasting from his room. By 4th grade I started to discover alternative bands like The Smashing Pumpkins and Silverchair. I thought myself saxophone in 5th grade but eventually switched to classical guitar in middle school. For a brief period, I was really into Hardcore and Punk until (strangely), classical guitar became my life.

In high school I continued to study classical guitar and began to play electric guitar in jazz band. I also started playing bass in the band The Venus Trasnit where I learned to vibe with other musicians and think outside the box. As a senior I auditioned for Radford University's classical guitar program and received a scholarship. For the next two years I lived and breathed guitar until I had an unfortunate accident, which broke my left collarbone. After months with my arm in a sling I was finally able to play guitar again and everything that I was taught suddenly clicked; and I finally understood the instrument.

Today I manage a little music shop called the Music Doctors in Blacksburg, VA where I get to play a variety of instruments, talk to musicians and read books all day everyday.

Presently I have many different influences for each style (there’s so many!)

Electric guitar (rock)- S.R.V., John Mayer, David Gilmore, Steve Vai and Eric Johnson
Electric guitar (jazz)- Stanley Jordan, Pat Metheny
Acoustic guitar- Don Ross, John Mayer, Andy McKee
Classical guitar- Andrew York, Bach, Barrios, Villa-Lobos
Bass guitar- Victor Wooden, Gary Shea

Bands that have influenced me:
The Smashing Pumpkins
Pink Floyd
The Mars Volta
Apartment 26
Minus the Bear
Thrice
Pulse Ultra
Emery
Dave Matthew's Band
The Foo Fighters
Led Zeppelin
Mae
Soulive
Circa Survive

Band Profile: Bradley Steele

"I sing and play guitar for Aside Oceans. Been performing for around 11 years now. I have toured almost the entire east coast and some mid west. I have been singing for this lineup in AO for almost 3 years, and I can assure you we aint finished yet:) First and foremost.. I would have to say  Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Billy Corgan are my favorite rock n roll musicians of all time. Just because I am and forever will be a 90s kid lol. My favorite styles of music are 90s alternative and grunge, the blues, and classic rock. Nirvana, the Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and the Deftones are my top 90s bands. If you found me rocking the Blues you would hear some Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howling Wolf, Buddy Guy, THE ROLLING STONES!, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, and John Mayer, My classic rock side holds my favorite band THE ROLLING STONES! Mic Jagger is my favorite artist hands down.. He is the definition of a rocknroll frontman. I also like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Tom Petty. I have many many more, but we would be here all day lol. I'll leave you with this quote by Jimi Hendrix:) ""With the music we will draw pictures of earth and sand. So the listener might be taken somewhere"
God Save RocknRoll!"

Band Profile: Billy Steele

Okay boys and girls, we hope that you found yesterday's blog about Tyler interesting and hope you learned something about him maybe you didn't know. As promised we talked with Billy Steele and here's what he had to say:

Alright my influences,as a song writer I'm very influenced by Bob and Jakob Dylan, Jon Foreman of Switchfoot, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Dustin Kensrue from Thrice, and George Harrison from the Beatles.

As a guitar player I am highly influenced by Keith Richards(The Stones), David Gilmour(Floyd) , Jack White, Chris Shiflett(Foo Fighters) John Mayer, and Mitchell Marlow(Classic Case).

I have only seriously played guitar for about 4 years now. I played drums for years in bands, and always dabbled with the guitar. Then Aside Oceans had some mad line up changes, and a guitar player was in need so I stepped away from the skins to really dig dip into the guitar.I found a home with it. I love it. I love the drums too, I just LOVE the guitar. I get to play all these songs that I write. I know all the other guys are contributing factors, and it is awesome hearing it all come together.

Here is a quote to live by:
"I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. It seems to infuse strength into my limbs and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music."
- George Elliot -

Keep checking back guys for more info on the band we all know and love as Aside Oceans. Til next time...ROCK ON!!! \,,/

Band Profile: Tyler Davis

As we mentioned yesterday we will be profiling each member for the next little bit so anyone who wants to know anything about the guys feel free to throw up a question and we will be sure to answer it for you. Today we look at Tyler Davis. When we asked him about his like and dislikes in music, how long he has been playing and that sort of thing Tyler had this to say:

"I've been seriously playing guitar for almost 4 years now, although I originally started on bass. Guitar was just more my thing I guess, haha. I also spent 3years playing instruments like tenor drums, marimba and vibrophone, and other sorts of auxilary percussion. As for what I listen to, I listen to rock mostly, but I get down to other genres like reggae, old school rap and country. Some of my favorite bands would be the Foo Fighters, Pink Floyd,Bob Marley and the Wailers, Mae, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Cave In, He is Legend, The Rolling Stones,  stone Temple Pilots, Queen, Blue Oyster Cult, the list goes on."

Now that we know a little more about Tyler stay tuned to the Aside Oceans Blog because tomorrow we will talking with Billy Steele.

Aside Oceans...What Rock & Roll Should Be

This blog was started to get the word out about the next big thing in the rock & roll world, Aside Oceans. Coming from the little town of Pulaski,VA these guys have what it takes to make it in the ever-changing music industry of today. With a mix of classic rock and 90s style alternative and outrageous three part harmonies these guys have the staying power and the drive that many of today's musicians and singers truly lack.

The band is comprised of five members who share one common goal, to make it in the music business. Bradley Steele, front man and rhythm guitar can be heard bellowing vocals of such tunes as "Let Me Put My Love Into You" by classic rock giant AC/DC. He also can be heard on Aside Oceans' songs like "Voices In The Hands", "Crazy World", and "Make Them Make A First Move Conway."

Without a driving bass line a rock band is utterly useless. This is a problem that Aside Oceans DOES NOT have with John Rardin on the bass. The bass lines played by this towering bass player are the driving force that keeps the band in time.

We all know that a good drummer is a "must have" for a band with the many different styles of music that Aside Oceans has. They are not lacking in that category either with Kevin Chinault banging away on the skins. Very charismatic and very talented Kevin has what it takes to move to the next level.

Taking turns out front on various lead solos are Tyler Davis and Billy Steele. These guys have as much chemistry onstage as Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. (If Mick played guitar that is!) The blistering riffs these two musical geniuses belt out are sure to amaze even the most judgmental critics.

The purpose of this blog is to expose the outside world to what is sure to be a staple in the rock & roll community for years to come. Feel free to comment and leave your feedback about the band. Check back regularly. We are sincerely hoping that the use of an Aside Oceans blog will reach the masses with the word about this awesome band. Until next time ROCK ON!!! \,,/
